Any system that synthesizes a written answer from retrieved sources instead of returning a list of links.

Definition

An answer engine is the category that includes Perplexity, ChatGPT with browsing, Claude with web tool, Gemini, AI Overviews, You.com, Phind, and Brave Search Summarizer. The defining feature: the user gets one synthesized answer with inline citations, not a SERP of links. AEO is optimization for this category specifically.

Example

Perplexity is an answer engine. Google.com SERP is NOT (it returns links). Google.com SERP with an AI Overview at the top IS a hybrid surface.
